About Us:

Chartered as a non-profi t corporation on April 17, 1986, the Arkansas Eye Bank & Laboratory, Inc. (AEB&L) was formed to provide medically certifi ed corneal tissue to Arkansans. The leadership of the board provides a unique blend of lay people who
are members of Lions Clubs International, teaching physicians, and physicians in private practice.

In addition to being granted membership in the Eye Bank Association of America on January 24, 1988, the AEB&L also became the first and only eye bank in Arkansas to be certifi ed by the Eye Bank Association of America to inspect corneal tissue.

Medical credibility was further sustained when the AEB&L became the only organization of its kind to receive offi cial endorsements of the Arkansas Medical Society, the Pulaski County Medical Society, and the Arkansas Ophthalmologic Society. At a special Board meeting held on June 17, 1999, AEB&L officially became Arkansas Lions Eye Bank & Laboratory (ALEB&L) following approval from Lions Clubs International. It became a State Lions Club project at the 1997 Arkansas Lions State Convention.

Situated on the fifth floor of the new world-class Walker Research Tower, in the Jones Eye Institute, on the campus of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, the Arkansas Lions Eye Bank & Laboratory is supervised by the Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology.

The daily activities of the Laboratory’s certified technicians are supervised by the Eye Bank’s Medical Director, a board certified corneal surgeon. Training sessions are conducted around the state for medical professionals and morticians by Eye Bank personnel.

An Endowment Trust was established in early 1999 to receive bequests and donations to benefit critical eye research and sight conservation efforts.

The continued leadership role occupied by the Arkansas Lions Eye Bank and Laboratory, Inc. is of vital interest to Arkansans concerned with sight conservation, restoration, and preservation.
